Uzbekistan drafts constitutional amendments
The upper and lower chambers of the Uzbek parliament and a commission formed by them have prepared the final version of the draft law on introducing amendments and additions to the state’s constitution.
On March 6, Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with members of the parliament’s lower and upper chambers, as well as the Supreme Court leadership, and discussed with them the results of the review of proposals received from citizens to make changes and additions to the constitution. In all, more than 200,000 proposals were studied and the international experience was taken into account, TASS reports.
After several months of study, the final version of the draft constitutional law on amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan was prepared," he wrote in his Telegram- channel.
In December 2021, Mirziyoyev proposed changes to the constitution, and in May 2022, the parliament formed a commission to draft amendments to the country's 1992 basic law.
The president also proposed to hold a national referendum on amendments to the constitution. According to the decision of the parliament, the national discussion of the draft law on amendments to the constitution should have lasted until July 4, 2022, inclusive. However, because of the mass unrest in Karakalpakstan, the parliament extended the discussion on July 1 and 2. After the adoption of the bill’s final version, the parliament is expected to decide on the referendum date.
