Two violent earthquakes struck Southeast Asia today, shaking buildings in Bangkok, Thailand, and prompting evacuations across the city and neighboring Myanmar.
Thai authorities have declared a state of emergency in the capital, as the tremors caused significant disruption and damage, Caliber.Az reports, citing French media.
According to preliminary reports from the US Geological Survey and Germany's GFZ Center for Geosciences, the first earthquake, measuring magnitude 6.2, struck around midday at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) with its epicenter located in Myanmar. Just 12 minutes later, a second, more powerful quake measuring magnitude 6.4 shook the region.
In Bangkok, the tremors were strong enough to make high-rise buildings sway, sending residents into a panic. Emergency services report that a construction site in the city experienced a devastating collapse, with 43 people trapped in the rubble. Dramatic footage circulating on social media shows a multi-story building with a crane on top collapsing into a cloud of dust, as bystanders screamed and fled the scene.
While there were no immediate reports of casualties, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra called for an emergency meeting to assess the damage and coordinate relief efforts. Authorities have been working quickly to evacuate residents from high-rise apartments and hotels, as alarms sounded throughout the greater Bangkok area, which is home to over 17 million people.
Buildings in central Bangkok saw frightened residents evacuating down staircases and into the streets, where they sought shade from the midday sun while waiting for further instructions. The earthquake was felt across nearly all regions of Thailand, with local officials from the Department of Disaster Prevention continuing to assess the damage.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Monywa in central Myanmar. In Naypyitaw, the capital of Myanmar, religious shrines were damaged, and parts of them fell to the ground, while some homes sustained damage as well.
