WHO warns of respiratory risks from "black rain" in Iran

10 March 2026 17:31

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that so-called “black rain” in Iran following strikes on oil facilities could pose serious health risks, particularly respiratory problems, and endorsed official guidance urging residents to remain indoors.

The UN health agency said it had received multiple reports this week of oil-contaminated rainfall in parts of the country. The phenomenon follows intensified attacks on Iran’s domestic energy infrastructure as part of the ongoing US-Israeli military campaign, France 24 reports.

Tehran was engulfed in thick black smoke on March 9 after an oil refinery was hit, raising concerns about air quality and the potential for hazardous pollutants to mix with rainfall.

“The black rain and the acidic rain coming with it is indeed a danger for the population, respiratory mainly,” WHO spokesperson Christian Lindmeier told a press briefing in Geneva, adding that Iran had advised people to stay indoors.

Iranian authorities have issued public health advisories recommending that residents limit outdoor exposure amid fears that toxic particles released by the strikes could aggravate respiratory conditions and other health issues.
