Wildfire crisis escalates in Spain, forcing mass evacuations

13 August 2026 14:03

More than 1,000 people have been evacuated as wildfires continue to spread across parts of Spain, with tens of thousands of hectares of land already burned, Antena 3 reports.

A total of 681 people were evacuated in Huelva province in the Andalusia region, while another 477 residents were forced to leave their homes in Huesca province in Aragon.

The fires have scorched approximately 37,000 hectares combined. More than 31,000 hectares have burned in Huelva, while the blaze in Huesca has affected around 5,705 hectares.

Hundreds of firefighters and military personnel, supported by aerial firefighting aircraft, have been deployed to contain the fires and prevent further spread.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) classified the wildfire risk across much of the country as “high” or “extreme,” amid conditions favorable for the rapid spread of fires.
