Witkoff heads to Qatar as Washington, Tehran differ on talks
U.S. President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has travelled to Doha for a potential meeting with Iranian representatives, according to CNN, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The visit comes amid conflicting signals over whether formal talks between Washington and Tehran will take place. The meeting in Qatar’s capital was reportedly organised at Iran’s request, although uncertainty remains over the composition of the U.S. delegation. CNN said it was unclear whether Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, had joined Witkoff on the trip.
Trump said on Monday that the United States would meet with Iran in Doha on Tuesday. He had earlier indicated that the talks, requested by Tehran, were scheduled for June 30.
A senior U.S. official told CNN over the weekend that technical discussions related to a memorandum of understanding were “on track” despite a recent exchange of fire between the two sides.
However, Iranian officials have publicly denied that any talks are imminent. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said no negotiations with the United States were planned in Qatar.
“No technical working group meetings are scheduled for this week,” he said.
