WSJ: US senators propose new mechanism to supply Ukraine with weapons
Republican senators in the United States have developed a mechanism to arm Ukraine with American weapons funded by European allies.
According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Republican Senators Roger Wicker and Jim Risch have drafted the Peace Act, which envisions the creation of a special fund to be financed by Ukraine’s European allies to pay for American weapons.
The bill provides for the establishment of a fund within the U.S. Department of the Treasury to receive money from the allies.
The funds can then be used by the Secretary of Defense to pay military contractors to replenish U.S. stockpiles so that they can continue supplying weapons to Ukraine.
The senators expect the fund to collect between 5 and 8 billion dollars annually, with Germany and the United Kingdom likely to be the main donors.
According to Wicker, the Peace Act gives U.S. President Donald Trump and the allies an additional tool to accelerate the delivery of military aid to Ukraine using existing American stockpiles.
Wicker discussed the bill with the White House, which generally received the idea positively, according to his aides quoted by WSJ.
The authors of the Peace Act hope it can be passed by the end of 2025 as part of the annual defence policy bill prepared by the Senate Armed Services Committee chaired by Wicker.
