Xi Jinping pledges to propel China to forefront of global technology
In a recent article, The New York Times highlights that Chinese President Xi Jinping made one thing abundantly clear: he’s determined to catapult China to the forefront of global technology.
During China’s annual legislative meeting, President Xi Jinping emphasised his commitment to positioning China as a global technological superpower, undeterred by domestic challenges like the economic slowdown, local government debt, or trade tensions with the US.
The National People’s Congress, held in Beijing, once served as a forum for occasional dissent, with delegates sometimes voicing concerns about issues such as pollution. However, Xi has transformed the meeting into a weeklong event that showcases his leadership and vision. This year, he focused on advancing technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and new weapons.
“Xi has seen how decades of investment into science by the U.S. government after World War II was a knockout success for the United States, and wants to replicate that,” said Jimmy Goodrich, senior adviser at RAND. “He believes strongly that only by being more self-sufficient and a global leader in science can China achieve success in upgrading its economy, boosting its military capabilities, and achieving world-leader status,” he added.
Xi’s message was clear: efforts to rejuvenate China’s private sector must align with national goals. The annual congress provides Xi with an opportunity to secure public endorsement for his priorities. Dissenting votes among the nearly 3,000 delegates have become virtually non-existent.
Xi’s agenda was reflected throughout the congress. On the first day, he met with delegates from Jiangsu Province, urging them to focus on “scientific and technological innovation.” The following day, he underscored the importance of education in transforming China into a “science and technology great power.” On the third day, Xi met with the People’s Liberation Army to emphasize military modernization and the application of advanced technologies.
China’s annual budget, which includes significant increases in science, technology, education, and military spending, signals Xi’s priorities. While critics argue that his focus on technological development neglects pressing domestic issues, Xi remains confident that technological advancement will address these concerns. With no signs of weakening control over his political power, Xi’s leadership remains unchallenged.
