Yerevan, Tehran focus on boosting trade, transport links
Official representatives of Armenia and Iran held talks in Yerevan on issues related to the development of infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity between the two neighboring countries.
According to the Armenian Ministry of Economy, the discussions took place during a meeting of the Armenia–Iran working group on increasing cross-border throughput capacity.
The meeting was co-chaired by Armenian Deputy Minister of Economy Edgar Zakaryan and Iranian Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Reza Akbari.
In particular, the sides discussed road toll payments for vehicles entering from the neighboring country (Armenian vehicles entering Iran and Iranian vehicles entering Armenia), as well as the development of logistics infrastructure and the operation of border crossing points.
Zakaryan expressed hope that the modernization of border infrastructure would provide an additional boost to bilateral trade.
It was noted that the Armenian Agarak border checkpoint on the frontier with Iran is currently undergoing reconstruction financed by a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
According to the Statistical Committee of Armenia, mutual trade with Iran increased by 6.7% in January–April 2026, reaching $237.4 million. Around 90% of this figure consisted of imports from Iran, which traditionally dominate bilateral trade between the two countries.
