Zelenskyy: Non-acceptance of Ukraine into NATO – historical mistake

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the non-acceptance of Ukraine into NATO is a historically wrong decision.

“NATO always found a reason why Ukraine cannot become its member,” RBC-Ukraine reports with reference to President Zelenskyy’s interview with CNN.

“Sweden and Finland were immediately accepted. The decision is right, however, with regard to Ukraine, the decision is historically wrong,” the president said.

The Ukrainian president noted that the world is assisting Ukraine by sending funds and weapons.

“Western countries do a lot for us, however, it would be easier to grant NATO membership,” the president said.

“If Ukraine is a NATO member and Russia attacks, what will happen? Ukraine is not a NATO member and Russia attacked. I am not offended because this is a joint decision of all NATO member states. However, it is necessary to look for a short distance to the result in any issues, rather than vice versa. Now we are talking about security guarantees, weapons, and financial support. Just by uniting, it is possible to accept Ukraine,” the president added.

The Ukrainian leader stressed that he was grateful to NATO for rendering assistance at the recent summit, however, if this had not happened, it would be completely cynicism.
