Zelenskyy ready to freeze front lines at current positions to end war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is prepared to freeze the front lines at their current positions if doing so would help bring an end to the war.

Speaking in an interview with Sky News, Zelenskyy was asked directly whether he would agree to freeze the front line where it currently stands if a ceasefire were announced tomorrow.

“Yes. It's the quickest way,” the president replied.

At the same time, Zelenskyy stressed that a simple freeze of the conflict is not the ultimate objective.

“It's not the idea just to freeze, but the quickest way to is to freeze and to move it to a diplomatic setting,” he explained.

Asked whether such a step would effectively amount to surrendering to Russia and giving Moscow what it wants, Zelenskyy rejected that characterisation. He argued that maintaining the current positions would give Ukraine an opportunity to save lives and bring soldiers home.

“To stay where we are means to give the people of Ukraine more possibilities to save their children, and for soldiers to come back. I think this is important for us,” Zelenskyy emphasised.
