Zelenskyy: Moscow planning fresh powerful strike on Ukrainian targets

29 January 2026 09:43

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that Russia’s armed forces are preparing a new large-scale strike against Ukrainian targets that could occur in the near future, citing intelligence information from the country’s special services.

Speaking in his evening address, Zelenskyy said Ukrainian intelligence had obtained evidence of impending Russian attacks.

“We also know that the Russians are preparing a new strike – our intelligence indicates this,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

He called on the international community — particularly the administration of US President Donald Trump — to recognise how such actions undermine diplomatic efforts.

"Now the United States, Europe, and all our partners have to understand how this discredits diplomatic talks. Every single Russian strike does,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

Zelenskyy also stressed that achieving peace requires decisive action to prevent further mass assaults.

“Everyone who truly wants peace must think about how to ensure that the Russians are preparing not for new massive attacks but for ending the war. The world has the power to make this happen. We just need to use that power – for the sake of peace. I thank everyone who approaches the situation exactly this way. Glory to Ukraine!” he wrote.

His remarks come as Ukraine’s energy sector faces a critical situation following heavy bombardment in January. Multiple media outlets indicate that this winter has been the harshest since the conflict began, with infrastructure nearing collapse and repair capacities almost fully depleted.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that about 600,000 residents left the capital in January alone due to widespread heating and electricity outages during temperatures dropping to −15°C.

After strikes carried out on January 13 and 20, 2026, emergency conditions continue in Odesa and Kharkiv. In the Kyiv region, thousands of high-rise residential buildings remain without heating, heightening concerns that another major attack could prove catastrophic for the cities’ basic life-support systems.

Meanwhile, on the night of January 28, Russian forces attacked Ukraine with an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 146 strike drones.
