Zelenskyy signals potential use of Ukrainian sea drones in Strait of Hormuz
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested the potential deployment of Ukrainian sea-drones in the Strait of Hormuz amid escalating regional tensions affecting maritime transit.
In an audio message shared with journalists, Zelenskyy spoke of the “possible use of Ukrainian sea-drones in the Strait of Hormuz” as part of “more deals to be signed” with Middle Eastern allies, Caliber.Az reports per CNN.
“We raised this issue because it is a pressing and sensitive matter for the entire world, given the current energy crisis,” Zelenskyy stated. “They know they can count on our expertise in this area,” he added.
Since February 28, US-Israeli strikes on Iran have shaken the region, provoking Iranian retaliation that has effectively closed the strait—linking Iran and Oman—causing oil prices to surge and food supply chains to tighten.
Arab leaders “understand that our armed forces have been very successful in unblocking the Black Sea Corridor,” Zelenskyy noted. “As for other areas, such as the Strait of Hormuz, in my view, the United States is handling that. We are certainly ready to assist our partners.”
The Ukrainian military has previously used naval drones to target Russian tankers in the Black Sea.
Zelenskyy’s comments followed a landmark defence agreement signed between Ukrainian and Saudi officials on March 27, signalling Kyiv’s growing engagement in the Middle East.
