Zelenskyy, Trump discuss defence support, path to lasting peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he had a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed defence assistance and ways to achieve a sustainable peace.
Zelenskyy shared details of the conversation in a post on his official Telegram channel, emphasising Trump’s continued support for Ukraine amid ongoing Russian aggression, Caliber.Az reports.
The Ukrainian leader noted that Trump had briefed him on his recent meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
"Thank you for your willingness to support Ukraine and continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace," Zelenskyy wrote.
According to the statement, the discussion focused on strengthening protection for the Ukrainian population from Russian strikes, enhancing Ukraine’s defence capabilities, and boosting coordination between Kyiv and Washington.
Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of NATO’s active role in the region and called for increased defence spending by allied nations.
Following the talks, both leaders agreed to maintain regular contact and coordinate future steps to ensure continued support and strategic alignment.
