The statement came after Hamas announced on October 4 that it had agreed to certain elements of a peace proposal put forward by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to the announcement, Hamas would relinquish power and release the remaining hostages, while additional aspects of the plan require further internal consultation among Palestinian factions.
The Trump-backed plan, unveiled earlier this week, calls for the immediate release of the 48 hostages believed to remain, of whom about 20 are reportedly alive. Hamas would also disarm and surrender authority in Gaza. In return, Israel would suspend offensive operations, withdraw from large areas of the Gaza Strip, release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, and allow large-scale humanitarian aid into the territory, with long-term reconstruction overseen by international actors.
Significantly, the plan abandons proposals to displace Gaza’s population abroad, instead placing the territory under international administration, to be overseen by Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. However, it does not provide for a future Palestinian state that would reunite Gaza with the Israeli-occupied West Bank.
Earlier on October 3, Trump had issued an ultimatum to Hamas, warning that failure to accept the plan by Sunday evening would result in a far more severe military assault.
