Zelenskyy: US, Ukrainian delegations expected to meet soon
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that a new meeting between US and Ukrainian representatives could take place in the coming days.
Speaking to the press, Zelenskyy said that the American side has already received feedback from European partners regarding current initiatives, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
Following this, he added, the United States intends to engage with Russia before arranging a meeting with Ukraine at the level of negotiating groups on US soil.
“American partners received the European responses yesterday. I believe that the US side will now contact the Russian side, and after that, there will be a meeting with Ukraine in the United States at the level of negotiating groups. I think it may happen in the coming days, perhaps over the weekend, or shortly thereafter,” Zelenskyy said.
On December 15, European leaders and EU Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said that any decisions on Ukrainian territorial concessions to Russia must come only after robust security guarantees are in place.
The leaders, meeting in Berlin to support U.S.-Ukraine peace talks, outlined that Ukraine should maintain armed forces of around 800,000 and be backed by a European-led multinational force with U.S. support.
The proposed security measures would include regenerating Ukraine’s forces, securing its skies, safeguarding its seas, and a U.S.-led ceasefire monitoring mechanism to detect and respond to attacks. “Decisions on territory are for the people of Ukraine, once robust security guarantees are effectively in place,” the statement said.
Separately, U.S. negotiators reportedly told Ukraine that any deal may require withdrawal from the eastern Donetsk region.
