Nepal imposes lockdown after Hindu, Muslim communities clash over offensive language
WORLD 04 October 2023 - 22:55
A town in Nepal, Nepalgunj, has enforced a lockdown due to escalating tensions between the local Hindu and Muslim communities triggered by a contentious social media post.
According to the Kathmandu Post, the unrest began when a Hindu boy posted a controversial status about Muslims on social media.
As a result, communal tensions escalated in this predominantly Hindu country, with Muslims expressing their frustration. They gathered inside the region's main government administrator's office, burned tires on the streets, and blocked traffic. In response, the local administration initially imposed a 24-hour curfew on October 2, which was later extended until further notice.
Area police chief Santosh Rathore stated that officers were patrolling the city, and people were prohibited from leaving their homes or congregating in groups during the lockdown. Fortunately, there have been no reports of further trouble since the lockdown was implemented.
Communal violence is not a common occurrence in Nepal, which is a Hindu-majority country that turned secular only a few years ago. In Nepalgunj, Muslims make up approximately one-third of the population. This situation highlights the need for measures to prevent clashes between different religious communities and maintain peace.
