Riots erupt in Spanish town after migrant attack on elderly man
Unrest broke out in the Spanish town of Torre-Pacheco following an attack on an elderly man by a group of migrants, Spanish news agency EFE reports.
According to the outlet, at least five people were injured in the riots, with three of them hospitalized due to their injuries.
The protests were reportedly sparked by an incident involving a group of Moroccan nationals who allegedly assaulted a 68-year-old pensioner while he was walking down the street. “They were speaking another language. If they had said ‘give me your watch’ or something like that, I would’ve understood. But they said nothing,” the victim recounted.
The incident is believed to have been exploited by radical groups, who used it as an opportunity to accuse authorities of failing to maintain safety on the streets.
In response, Torre-Pacheco Mayor Pedro Ángel Roca stated that those involved in the riots were not local residents. “You can’t fight crime with violence. That won’t get us anywhere,” he said.
