Ukrainian Parliament votes to suspend participation in Ottawa mine ban treaty
The Verkhovna Rada (Parliament) of Ukraine has passed a bill to suspend the country’s participation in the Ottawa Convention banning anti-personnel mines, as announced by Ukrainian MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak on his Telegram channel.
"The Verkhovna Rada has suspended the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction," Zheleznyak wrote, as per Caliber.Az.
On June 29, 2025, Zelenskyy signed a decree enacting the National Security and Defense Council’s decision to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention, citing Russia’s “cynical” use of mines and the defensive necessity of mines for Ukraine.
The Ottawa Convention, formally known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction, was adopted in 1997 and came into force in 1999. It seeks to eliminate anti-personnel landmines worldwide due to their long-lasting humanitarian impact, particularly on civilians after conflicts end.
