AfD dominates German party rankings, poll shows
The party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has widened its lead over the conservative bloc of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU), increasing its advantage to 3 percentage points and taking a clear first place in Germany’s political rankings.
According to a survey conducted by the INSA polling institute for Bild am Sonntag, the AfD currently has the support of 27% of respondents, up 1 percentage point from the previous week. Support for CDU/CSU has fallen by 1 point to 24%, marking the widest gap recorded in INSA polling history.
For the conservatives, this represents their weakest result in more than three months. Less than a year into the government led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), the CDU/CSU bloc has returned to levels last seen during the 2021 federal election.
Support for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) remains at 14%, while the Greens stand at 13%. The Left Party has slightly improved to 11% (+1), whereas the BSW has dropped to 3% (-1), below the parliamentary threshold.
AfD co-chair Alice Weidel commented that most polls now show a clear lead for her party over CDU/CSU, criticising the conservatives for failing to reflect on their policies.
The survey was conducted between April 13 and April 17 with 1,201 participants.
