Al-Monitor: US, Türkiye need each other
The successive visits to the United States by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Intelligence Chief Ibrahim Kalın signal a rebuilding of relations between Ankara and Washington.
According to Al-Monitor, Fidan and Kalın discussed bilateral relations, Syria, Iraq and the wars in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine with their US counterparts, as well as with the White House, State Department and Congress.
The crucial question these various reviews raise is whether Turkish-American relations are taking on a more institutionalized character, moving away from the transactional nature of give-and-take that has characterized recent years.
Good relations between Türkiye and the US are in the interest of the Turkish economy, the article says. It notes that Washington also needs Ankara. According to the publication, "while Israel's war in the Gaza Strip has damaged the prestige of the United States and the West in the Muslim world and in the Global South, where Türkiye’s influence has expanded under Erdogan, Ankara's presence on its side would be beneficial to Washington.
