Ankara submits official request to UN to confirm new spelling of Turkiye's name
Turkiye has submitted an official request to the UN to change the spelling of the country's name in foreign languages.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavushoglu announced this on his official Twitter account.
The diplomat noted that the innovation was adopted as part of Ankara's steps aimed at increasing the country's prestige in the international arena.
"The process that we started under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to increase the prestige of our country's brand is coming to an end. By the letter I sent today to the UN Secretary-General [Antonio Guterres], we register the name of our country in foreign languages at the UN as 'Turkiye'," Cavushoglu wrote.
Thus, from now on the name Turkiye ("Turkiye") will be used at all international forums and in official documents where various ethnonyms (Turkey, Turkei, Turkie, etc.) were previously used.
