Arab countries condemn Israel’s plans to expand settlements in Golan Heights
Arab nations, including the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq, have strongly condemned Israel's intentions to increase its presence in the Golan Heights, marking a new point of contention in the region.
The UAE Foreign Ministry issued a statement declaring that Israel’s decision constitutes a “deliberate attempt to expand the occupation,” stressing that it is in violation of international law. The ministry also warned that this move could lead to further escalation and increased tension in the region, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
The UAE reiterated its commitment to the unity, independence, and territorial integrity of Syria, in line with its longstanding stance on the Golan Heights, which remains internationally recognized as Syrian territory.
Qatar also voiced its disapproval, labeling Israel's actions as a continuation of "Israeli aggression in Syrian territories," describing it as a blatant violation of international law. Doha urged the international community to fulfill its legal and moral obligations in addressing such developments.
Iraq similarly condemned Israel’s plans, calling them a “blatant violation of international laws.” The Iraqi Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Golan Heights is occupied Syrian land, and any attempt to alter its status is “null and void.”
Saudi Arabia echoed Iraq’s stance, with its Foreign Ministry stating that Israel’s actions undermine Syria’s prospects for restoring its security and stability, further complicating efforts for regional peace.
On December 15, the Israeli government reportedly approved a plan to expand settlements and double the population in the Golan Heights.
The Golan Heights is a disputed region in the Middle East, with much of it currently controlled by Israel, while the eastern part remains under Syrian control. In response to recent political changes in Syria, Israel has decided to keep its military units stationed on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon throughout the winter.
