EU leaders to hold extraordinary meeting on Greenland, Costa says
European Union leaders will hold an extraordinary meeting in the coming days to discuss escalating tensions related to Greenland, European Council President António Costa announced, stressing unity among member states on a wide range of political, legal, and security issues.
In a statement published on X, Costa said his consultations with EU member states had reaffirmed a strong and collective commitment to several core positions. These include unity around the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty, as well as firm support for and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland amid the current situation, Caliber.Az reports.
My consultations with member states on the latest tensions over Greenland reconfirm our strong commitment to the following:

▪️ Unity on the principles of international law, territorial integrity and national sovereignty;
▪️ Unity in support of and solidarity with Denmark and…
Costa also highlighted a shared recognition among EU leaders of the transatlantic interest in maintaining peace and security in the Arctic region. He underlined the importance of cooperation through NATO in addressing Arctic security challenges, reflecting concerns over growing geopolitical tensions in the area.
On trade, Costa said there was a common assessment among member states that the use of tariffs would undermine transatlantic relations and would be incompatible with the existing EU–US trade agreement. He added that the European Union remains ready to defend itself against any form of coercion.
At the same time, Costa emphasised that the bloc is prepared to continue engaging constructively with the United States on all issues of common interest, despite the current tensions.
“Given the significance of recent developments and in order to further coordinate,” Costa wrote, “I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days."
