Norwegian PM confirms receipt of letter from Trump
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has confirmed that he received a letter from US President Donald Trump.
Speaking to Norwegian outlet Støre said: “I can confirm that I received this message yesterday afternoon from President Trump. It was sent in response to a brief note I had sent to President Trump earlier the same day, on my own behalf and on behalf of Finnish President Alexander Stubb.”
The Prime Minister stressed that Norway’s position on Greenland remains unchanged.
“Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter. We also support a responsible strengthening of NATO’s efforts to ensure security and stability in the Arctic,” he said.
Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, Støre underlined that he has repeatedly explained to Trump that the award is decided by an independent Nobel Committee, not the Norwegian government.
Earlier, Trump tied his claims on Greenland to not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in a letter to Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store.
“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” Trump wrote, according to Bloomberg. “Although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America.”
He added, “The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland.”
Norway clarified that the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded by an independent committee, not the government. “Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, I have several times clearly explained to Trump what is well known, namely that it is an independent Nobel Committee, and not the Norwegian government, that awards the prize,” Prime Minister Store said.
The letter was reportedly shared with several European governments by Trump’s National Security Council.
Trump’s Greenland threats have rattled NATO allies and prompted EU leaders to consider tariffs on up to €93 billion ($108 billion) of US goods if he follows through. “NATO has been telling Denmark, for 20 years, that ‘you have to get the Russian threat away from Greenland.’ Unfortunately, Denmark has been unable to do anything about it. Now it is time, and it will be done!!!,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Separately, the Norwegian Nobel Committee responded after Trump accepted a medal from Nobel laureate María Corina Machado. “The Nobel Prize and the laureate are inseparable,” the committee said. “Even if the medal or diploma later comes into someone else’s possession, this does not alter who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.”
