Germany mulls 2026 World Cup boycott to pressure Trump on Greenland
Jürgen Hardt, the foreign policy spokesperson for the Bundestag faction of the Christian Democratic and Christian Social Unions (CDU/CSU), raised the possibility of boycotting the 2026 FIFA World Cup, explaining the circumstances under which such a measure could be considered.
Hardt stated that refusing to attend the tournament could only be considered an extreme measure to make US President Donald Trump reconsider the Greenland issue, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
Earlier reports indicated that nearly 17,000 fans cancelled their World Cup tickets overnight in response to US actions. On January 3, US forces struck Venezuela, capturing and transferring its leader, Nicolás Maduro and his spouse to the United States.
The 2026 World Cup, the 23rd edition of the tournament, will take place in June and July across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the final scheduled for July 19.
The tournament was initially set to feature 32 teams, but on January 10, 2017, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced an expansion to 48 teams.
