Baku to host first Ironman 70.3 triathlon in Azerbaijan

Baku will host the Alufar Ironman 70.3 Baku international triathlon for the first time on September 5, bringing together around 1,500 athletes from 62 countries.

The event is being organised jointly by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Azerbaijan Triathlon Federation and the Baku City Circuit Operations Company, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Participants will compete in three stages: a 1.9-kilometre swim in the Caspian Sea, a 90.1-kilometre cycling course through Baku and a 21.1-kilometre run along the city’s waterfront boulevard. The race will finish near the Yeddi Gozal (Seven Beauties) fountain.

The top 25 male and female athletes will qualify for the 2027 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in the United States.

A series of events will also be held on September 4, including Ironkids races for children aged 5 to 17 and a 5-kilometre Fun Run for participants aged 18 and above.

The Ironman series was launched in Hawaii in 1978.
