Spanish Prime Minister cancels Davos trip after deadly train collision
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has canceled his planned attendance at the World Economic Forum in Davos following a catastrophic railway accident that has, according to the latest reports, claimed 39 lives.
El País reported that Sánchez, who was scheduled to meet with key international leaders—including US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei—and deliver a keynote speech at the forum, will instead travel to the scene of the disaster to assess the situation firsthand. All other engagements planned for the day, including a meeting with opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo, have been canceled.
The accident occurred when several carriages of the Iryo high-speed train, traveling from Málaga to Madrid with roughly 300 passengers, derailed and collided with an Alvia train heading toward Huelva, which carried 184 passengers. Several carriages of the Alvia train plunged down a four-metre embankment, significantly complicating rescue operations.
Rescue teams have been working at the scene amid challenging conditions. According to the latest information, the disaster has resulted in 39 confirmed fatalities, with numerous passengers also injured. Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision as emergency and recovery efforts continue.
