Argentina designates Iran’s IRGC as terrorist organisation
Argentina has formally designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, according to a statement from the presidential office, in a move that aligns Buenos Aires more closely with the stance of the United States.
The government of President Javier Milei said the decision was based on the IRGC’s alleged support for Hezbollah, which Argentina holds responsible for the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Community Centre in Buenos Aires, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
The attack killed 85 people and injured hundreds, and remains the deadliest in the country’s history.
The presidential office said the designation enables authorities to impose financial sanctions and other operational restrictions on the group.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces tasked with protecting the country’s clerical system and has significant influence over parts of the economy.
Both the IRGC and Hezbollah have already been designated as terrorist organisations by the United States and several other countries.
The announcement follows a broader shift by Argentina’s government to tighten security and align foreign policy more closely with Washington. Earlier this week, Buenos Aires also designated Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel as a terrorist organisation.
