Armenia flags Azerbaijan, Iran as fallback gas suppliers
Armenia could turn to alternative gas suppliers, including Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Iran, if the price of Russian gas rises, the head of the country’s Public Services Regulatory Commission, Mesrop Mesropyan, said on Thursday, June 11.
Mesropyan made the remarks at a briefing, according to Armenian media cited by Caliber.Az.
“There are alternatives in the region (to Russian gas, — ed.) — Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan or Iran. All possible countries that sell gas and whose infrastructure allows us to purchase gas from these countries, we will, of course, buy,” he said.
Mesropyan added that even in the event of an increase in the price of Russian gas, domestic gas tariffs in Armenia would remain unchanged until early 2027.
He noted that around 30–35% of Armenia’s electricity is generated at thermal power plants, meaning that any significant rise in gas prices would negatively affect electricity tariffs.
His comments highlight Armenia’s potential shift towards diversifying its energy imports amid concerns over possible price increases for Russian supplies.
