Armenia to expand cooperation on nuclear security with US
Armenia will expand cooperation on nuclear security with the US.
The draft agreement was approved at a governmental meeting, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.
The first such agreement, between the Armenian State Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee and the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, was concluded in 1997 and then re-signed every 10 years, in 2007 and 2017.
Armenia received assistance in retraining personnel, in particular, Armenian specialists were trained in modern computer codes and helped develop tools for assessing the safety of nuclear power plants (both radiation and seismic), including dry storage facilities within the agreements.
The renewal of the agreement envisages more US support in the physical protection of the station, maintaining the safety of radioactive waste, and monitoring the environment around the nuclear power plant.
