Armenian FM announces exploration of new nuclear power plant
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has announced that Armenia is exploring the potential construction of a new nuclear power plant and is studying the characteristics of small modular reactors.
In his address in Geneva, Mirzoyan explained that Armenia has adhered to high safety and protection standards during the operation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He noted that, as part of the country’s long-term energy strategy, Armenia is working toward a smooth transition to new energy capacities by 2036. To that end, Armenia has adopted a transparent and open policy for the safe and peaceful use of nuclear energy.
Mirzoyan emphasised that Armenia will continue to follow this policy, ensuring that necessary steps are taken to strengthen and maintain nuclear safety and security.
“We are currently thoroughly studying the characteristics of small modular reactors,” Mirzoyan said, highlighting the country's commitment to exploring innovative nuclear energy solutions.
The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, located in Metsamor, Armenia, is the country’s primary source of nuclear energy. It was initially commissioned in 1976, but its operations were halted following the 1988 Spitak earthquake, which raised concerns about the plant’s safety. After a series of upgrades and safety improvements, the plant was reopened in 1995. In recent years, Armenia has focused on modernizing the plant to meet international safety standards and extend its operational life.
