Seoul–Ottawa call focuses on energy, security and strategic ties
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung held a phone call on Friday, May 8, with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which the two leaders discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation across a range of areas, including efforts to secure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, quoted by Korean media, the leaders reached a common understanding on the need for closer coordination in international efforts to peacefully resolve the situation in the Middle East, ensure freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway, and maintain stable energy supplies.
Lee and Carney also agreed to further deepen their strategic partnership, expanding cooperation beyond traditional security matters to include the economy, energy, advanced industries, and cultural exchanges.
During the call, Lee described Canada as a key like-minded partner for South Korea and expressed hope for enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors, particularly in the context of a complex global order and ongoing instability in global energy markets.
Kang added that Carney emphasised the importance of strengthening solidarity among middle-power countries such as South Korea and Canada through a practical approach.
