Armenian PM stresses sovereignty, responsibility behind passport design overhaul

18 September 2025 13:46

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has addressed the recent decision to remove the depiction of Mount Ağrı (known in Armenia as Ararat)—from the stamps in Armenian passports, framing it as a strategic move to “set Armenia on the right aerodynamic course” and reinforce the nation’s statehood.

Speaking at a government briefing, Pashinyan emphasized that the initiative to revise the passport stamp was launched several months prior, predating any diplomatic developments such as the anticipated visit of Türkiye’s special envoy Kılıç to Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

The Prime Minister categorically denied any connection between the passport changes and Türkiye, stating that the issue was never on the agenda for discussion with Ankara and that such discussions are not envisaged.

Pashinyan further articulated that the decision reflects a broader commitment to internal recognition of Armenia’s territorial integrity, which he described as essential for ensuring the continuity and sovereignty of the Armenian state.

“We ourselves must recognize the territorial integrity of Armenia in order to ensure the continuity of the state... We want Armenia to be a responsible state and to live according to international rules,” Pashinyan affirmed, underscoring the government’s intention to align with established international norms and reinforce national legitimacy.

To recall, by government decision, effective November 1, Mount Ağrı will be removed from border entry and exit stamps of the Republic of Armenia. The decision was adopted on September 11.
