Russian FM: Kallas "frankly admits interference" by promising Armenia help in elections
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has criticised comments by the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, regarding the EU’s readiness to assist Yerevan with upcoming elections, calling them a “frank admission of Europe’s interference in Armenia’s internal affairs."
“A frank admission, a voluntary confession,” Lavrov said, commenting on Kallas’s remarks, TASS reports.
He added that the EU’s assistance seems to follow a scenario in which the victory of a pro-Western candidate would be positively evaluated, while a win by an independent candidate would attract criticism from Brussels.
Kallas made the statement on December 15, saying that Brussels is ready to help Armenia counter possible malicious foreign influence on the elections, drawing on consultation practices previously implemented during elections in Moldova. Kallas's statement came after Armenia's own request to support it in preventing potential foreign interference during parliamentary elections scheduled for June 2026. "Armenia have elections coming, and what can we do to help them? They have asked similar help to fight the malign influence, like we granted to Moldova."
