Armenia’s Justice Ministry publishes breakdown of prisoner numbers
A total of 1,407 convicted prisoners and 1,466 detainees are currently being held in Armenia’s penitentiary institutions, according to official figures from the country’s Ministry of Justice.
As reported by Caliber.Az, citing Armenian media, the information was provided by the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice in response to inquiries regarding the size and composition of the prison population, including age distribution and the placement of those serving life sentences.
The service said that as of November 1, there are 38 women and five minors among detainees and individuals being held in penitentiary institutions. Among convicted prisoners, the figures include 39 women and one minor. The oldest female inmate is 79 years old, born in 1946, while the youngest is 17, born in 2007.
The Penitentiary Service also reported that 80 inmates are serving life sentences. All of them were convicted of particularly serious crimes, most commonly under Part 2 of Article 104 of the Criminal Code, which covers murder.
According to the data, the oldest person serving a life sentence is 70 years old, born in 1955, while the youngest is 35, born in 1990.
