Russian ballistic missile strikes target Kyiv region
Russian forces launched ballistic missiles toward Kyiv on the morning of August 22, with explosions reported in the Kyiv region, according to Ukraine’s Air Force.
The Ukrainian military had earlier warned of missiles heading toward Kyiv and Boryspil. It later said ballistic missiles had been detected over the Chernihiv region moving toward Kyiv.
The strikes followed a Russian overnight attack involving 217 missiles and strike drones, according to Ukrainian authorities. Ukraine’s air defence forces intercepted most of the targets, while some reached their destinations.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration head Timur Tkachenko said the latest attacks killed one person in the Boryspil district and injured five others. He said a warehouse, car park, vehicles, a private house and a petrol station were damaged.
Emergency services were working at the scene, while authorities were assessing the number and condition of casualties.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had struck a military airfield as well as fuel, energy and transport infrastructure in Ukraine over the previous 24 hours. It said the strikes were carried out using aircraft, drones, missiles and artillery, and claimed the targeted facilities were being used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
