Russia says Türkiye's possible handback of S-400s not to affect bilateral ties
Russia does not believe that the issue of a possible return of S-400 air defence systems by Türkiye would have an impact on bilateral relations, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, according to RBK.
Commenting on recent media reports, Peskov stated that Moscow does not view the matter as one that could negatively affect relations between the two countries.
Earlier, Bloomberg reported that Türkiye is seeking to return the S-400 air defence systems purchased from Russia. According to the agency’s sources, Ankara’s potential отказ from the S-400 could help improve relations with Washington, open the way for the lifting of U.S. sanctions against Türkiye’s defence industry, and restore access to the F-35 fighter jet program.
Türkiye acquired the Russian-made S-400 systems in 2019, a move that led to U.S. sanctions and Ankara’s removal from the F-35 program.
Türkiye currently possesses but does not operate the S-400 systems. The move comes amid pressure from Washington, including discussions during Erdoğan's September White House meeting with President Donald Trump. Trump's ally and US ambassador to Türkiye, Tom Barrack, indicated earlier this month that a resolution could occur within 4-6 months.
