Australia joins global chorus of support for Ukraine after tense White House debate

Following the fiery debate between US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy in front of media representatives at the White House, multiple foreign leaders have chosen sides in the form of public statements, including Australia’s prime minister.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine in the aftermath of the heated discussion, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

“We will continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it takes,” Albanese stated a day following the public clash, which took place on February 29.

He added that support for the embattled European nation was in Australia’s national interest, hence stating that Australia stand "unequivocally with Ukraine in their struggle, because we regard that as a struggle for the upholding of international law.”

The Australian leader also had addressed Russia's Vladimir Putin, calling his government "an authoritarian regime [...], who clearly has imperialistic designs, not just on Ukraine, but throughout that region.”

During the public fallout in Washington, Trump, together with his Vice-President JD Vance, accused Zelenskyy for not being interested in a ceasefire and the rare earth mineral deal, which was supposed to be signed during Zelenskyy's visit but ultimately was not.

“I tell you how you get peace in Ukraine really quickly, which is Russia stopping its illegal and immoral invasion, and Russia stopping the attacks on civilians, on civil infrastructure, engaging in this act of aggression that they have engaged in now for three years,” Albanese said.
