Azerbaijan ensures free passage of Armenian civilians via Lachin checkpoint Accompanied by ICRC
People of Armenian origin have once again freely crossed through the Lachin border checkpoint accompanied by the staff of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
A group of 30 people of Armenian origin arrived from Khankandi in a car belonging to ICRC and freely crossed the Lachin border checkpoint in the direction of the Gorus district of Armenia, Caliber.Az reports.
Nine of them have health problems.
Azerbaijan erected the Lachin border checkpoint on the border with Armenia in April 2023 in the wake of regular shipments of arms and ammunition through the area. Since August 2022, a total of 2,728 landmines produced in Armenia in 2021 were detected and neutralised, 1,119 of which were in the Kalbajar and Lachin districts along the border area with Armenia, and 1,609 in the territory of the Garabagh Economic Region.
Prior to the erection of the border checkpoint, the illegal supplies by Armenians through the Lachin road and other roads bypassing it, went on despite multiple warnings and local control measures taken by Baku, necessitating the urgent installation of the checkpoint.
Currently, the checkpoint enables free and safe movement to and from the Karabakh region, based on the legislation of Azerbaijan. It was temporarily closed twice in May and June for investigation purposes following bloody provocations committed by the Armenian military.
