Azerbaijan extracts nearly four billion cubic metres of gas in January 2025
Azerbaijan's gas production in January 2025 totalled 3.979 billion cubic metres, marking a 6.4% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, according to the State Statistics Committee.
In addition, the extraction of marketable gas during the reporting period fell by 4.8%, reaching 3.112 billion cubic metres, Caliber.Az reports.
As previously reported, Azerbaijan's total gas production for 2024 amounted to 50.597 billion cubic metres, reflecting a 4.3% increase over 2023.
Recently, Babek Huseynov, Vice-President of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) said that Azerbaijan's gas production had exceeded projections, a result of strategic investments in the nation’s gas fields
“Gas production is exceeding our expectations, and Azerbaijan is strengthening its position as a key supplier and strategic partner to Europe,” Huseynov stated. Despite a decline in oil production due to the maturation of existing fields, he described the trend as an opportunity for innovation and transformation.
Huseynov also outlined ongoing oil and gas projects, including Karabakh, Absheron, and deep-gas developments in the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block, which will enhance Azerbaijan’s resource base and stabilize long-term energy exports.
SOCAR's recent international expansion includes acquiring a 10% stake in the Tamar gas project and a 3% interest in the SARB and Umm Lulu fields. “SOCAR has long been an international oil and gas company, but its foreign activities have primarily focused on refining and trading. Now, we are expanding our international operations in production,” Huseynov explained.
He also highlighted the role of the Azneft Production Union, which manages over 100,000 barrels of oil production daily.
Azerbaijan continues to solidify its role as a critical energy supplier to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), which transports Azerbaijani gas to Europe, with a key focus on Italy.
