Azerbaijan’s vessel Murovdağ completes repairs, set for first Egypt–US voyage PHOTO

06 January 2026 17:22

The Handysize-type vessel Murovdağ, owned by ASCO, part of AZCON Holding, has successfully completed major repairs at Özata Shipyard in Türkiye, and following this extensive overhaul, its first voyage is scheduled from Egypt to the United States.

Mehman Mehdiyev, head of the press service of Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Closed Joint-Stock Company (ASCO), told Caliber.Az that the overhaul was executed with high professional standards under the supervision of RINA, a recognised member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).

Every phase of the repairs was carefully monitored to ensure compliance with international safety and operational standards.

Special focus was placed on the reliability and performance of mechanical and technical systems. The main engines underwent a comprehensive overhaul performed by a manufacturer-approved service provider, with the active participation of the ship’s superintendent. Similarly, the vessel’s three auxiliary engines were overhauled through close collaboration between the onboard crew and manufacturer engineers.

In the engine room, pipeline thickness was assessed using advanced laser measurement technology, and all pipes identified as unsuitable were replaced. Electrical systems, including switchboards and equipment, were thoroughly tested to guarantee full operational readiness.

Environmental compliance was a key priority throughout the repair process. The five-year maintenance schedule for the Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS) was implemented, and modifications were made to allow ballast operations in US waters. This upgrade enables Murovdağ to conduct ballast operations unrestrictedly in all international waters.

Cargo handling equipment was inspected and tested in accordance with international conventions, with manufacturers confirming that all systems are fully functional. Navigation equipment was also reviewed, and necessary service certificates were issued by the relevant manufacturers.

Deck and cargo hold painting was completed, while the underwater hull was cleaned and coated with a specialised protective layer. The full operational status of the EPL emissions control system was verified, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

Following these extensive repairs, Murovdağ has been modernised and returned to service in a safer and fully compliant condition. The vessel’s first voyage after the overhaul is scheduled from Egypt to the United States.

Murovdağ has a deadweight capacity of 38,000 tonnes, with dimensions of 180 meters in length, 30 meters in width, and 15 meters in depth, along with a draft of 10.47 meters. The vessel can reach a maximum speed of 15.7 knots, and its optimal full-load draft allows access to a variety of shallow-water ports safely.
