Azerbaijan to commence two hydropower stations in liberated lands
Construction of the “Khudafarin” and “Giz Galasi” hydroelectric power stations on the Iran-Azerbaijan border continues.
Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Iran, Ali Alizade, said the hydroelectric facilities would be put into operation soon, Trend reports.
According to him, the working groups from Azerbaijan and Iran held a meeting recently to discuss the developments on the projects’ realization.
«Ninety-five percent of the work has been completed. We expect to finish the rest and put the facilities online soon,” Alizade said.
The “Khudafarin,” hydropower plant is the third-largest facility of its kind in Azerbaijan. Together with the “Giz Galasi”, the power plant will jointly produce 716 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. In addition, they will enable irrigation of a total of 97,000 hectares of territory. The commencement of the stations is scheduled for some time in 2022.
Construction of the hydropower plants have been resumed by Azerbaijan and Iran following the liberation of the Azerbaijani lands from Armenian occupation in 2020.
The Khudafarin dam is located 8 kilometers west of Khomarlu city in Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province, Iran and 14 kilometers southwest of the Soltanlı village in the Jabrayil district of Azerbaijan, which was occupied in 1993, during the First Karabakh War.
