Larijani returns to lead Iran’s Supreme National Security Council
Ali Larijani has been officially appointed as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), following a directive issued by Masoud Pezeshkian.
The SNSC, established in the early days of the Islamic Revolution, serves as a central institution responsible for formulating Iran’s foreign policy, defence, and national security strategies, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
The council’s membership comprises senior political figures, military commanders, and intelligence officials, underscoring its critical role in shaping the country’s strategic direction.
A former member of the Revolutionary Guards, Larijani held the same top security position from 2005 to 2007 and was parliamentary speaker from 2008 to 2020. He now replaces Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who had become SNSC secretary in 2023.
On August 3, amid new threats from US President Donald Trump, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council resolved to establish a special body known as the Defence Council, which will be tasked with addressing the country’s protection against external threats.
