New island emerges in Caspian Sea as water levels fall VIDEO

26 August 2026 14:16

A new island has emerged in Kazakhstan’s Caspian Sea amid declining water levels, according to Yerbolat Mukhashov, founder of Caspian Holiday.

Mukhashov said new islands had begun appearing in the northern part of the Caspian Sea over the past four to five years as the sea level fell, Caliber.Az reports per Kazakh media.

The area includes several islands inhabited by Caspian seals, including Kulaly, Morskoy, Svyatoy, Podgorny, Usharal, Mayakshykan and Dolgiy.

One of the recently emerged islands, named Rybachy, is located about 500 metres east of Svyatoy Island and roughly 30 kilometres from the village of Bautino.

Mukhashov said wolves were the main inhabitants of the islands, while wild boars and badgers could also be found there. The surrounding waters and islands are home to various species of fish and birds.

He said he had visited the new island with the assistance of Daniyar Akimzhanov, a Caspian Sea conservationist and environmental expert from the Mangystau region.

The island was filmed from the air.
