Russia summons Romanian envoy amid escalating diplomatic row

Romania's Charge d'affaires in Moscow, Liliana Burda was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on August 27, amid growing diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Bucharest.

The summons follows Bucharest’s decision to expel a Russian diplomat after the Romanian Air Force shot down three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that Romanian authorities said were Russian and had entered the country’s airspace over a three-day period, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Alexey Fadeev, Deputy Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Information and Press Department, said Moscow would not respond by recalling its ambassador from Bucharest.

Russia would not “copy” what he described as a “theatrical gesture” by the Romanian side, Fadeev said, while stressing that Moscow would take an appropriate response to the expulsion of the Russian diplomat.

Burda was previously summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry in April 2025 and held talks at the ministry’s headquarters on Smolenskaya Square.
