Georgia launches campaign for local elections scheduled in October

05 August 2025 16:44

The official campaign period for Georgia’s forthcoming local elections has commenced following a presidential decree issued by President Mikheil Kavelashvili.

The elections are scheduled to take place on October 4, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

Thus, the pre-election campaign will last 60 days, during which voters will prepare to elect mayors and councillors in 64 cities and districts across the country.

All Georgian citizens aged 18 and above, residing either at their registered address or actual place of residence, are eligible to vote.

Voters will receive three ballots: one for mayoral elections, one for party-list proportional representation, and one for single-member constituency contests.

A 4% electoral threshold applies to proportional representation for all district assemblies — known as sakrebulo. To win mayoral or single-member seats, candidates must secure a majority of votes. Each sakrebulo consists of between 15 and 50 seats.

So far, six parties have confirmed their participation: Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia; New Political Centre – Girchi; Lelo – Strong Georgia; For Georgia; Conservatives for Georgia; and Homeland, Language, Faith.

Meanwhile, Freedom Square, European Georgia, United National Movement, Strategy Agmashenebeli, Akhali, Girchi – More Freedom, Droa, and the Federalists have officially declined to take part in the elections.
