Azerbaijani people's bloody executioner dies at age of 92
Last Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who won Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending Cold War tensions, died on August 30 at the age of 92.
"Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev passed away tonight after a serious and protracted disease," Lenta.ru reports quoting a source at Russia's Central Clinical Hospital.
The Soviet leader, who is globally applauded for forging arms reduction treaties with the US and alliances with Western powers to lift the Iron Curtain that had divided Europe since World War Second and bring Germany back together, failed to prevent the Soviet Union from collapsing.
However, the Azerbaijani people remember him as the mastermind of the tragic events when, on the night of January 19-20, 1990, Soviet army units entered Baku and massacred the civilian population. That night, 147 civilians were killed, 744 were injured, many of them were left disabled, and 841 people were illegally arrested.
January 20 entered the history of Azerbaijan as a day of tragedy and heroism. The mass funeral of the martyrs showed the whole world not only the sorrow but also the courage and close solidarity of the Azerbaijani people in the name of a single idea.
