Azerbaijani president signs decree for new museum complex in Aghdam

21 February 2025 10:31

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, has signed a decree for the establishment of the "Imarat" Historical and Architectural Museum Complex in the city of Aghdam, a significant step towards preserving and promoting the rich history and cultural heritage of Karabakh.

The decision comes as part of an effort to deeply explore the historical significance of the Karabakh region and to commemorate the legacy of the Karabakh Khanate, founded by Panahali Khan, Caliber.Az reports, citing the president’s official website.

The decree emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the region's historical facts and ensuring that future generations are aware of the vital role Karabakh has played in Azerbaijan's history.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan is tasked with overseeing the transfer of the "Imarat" Museum Complex and associated state property to the Ministry of Culture. Furthermore, necessary financial provisions will be made through the state budget to ensure the complex's successful operation.

The Aghdam Imarat Complex is a historically and culturally significant monument located in the city of Aghdam, Azerbaijan. This complex was originally built as the summer palace of Panahali Khan, the first ruler of the Karabakh Khanate, during the 18th century. The palace, known for its architectural elegance, was one of the earliest properties of the Karabakh khan dynasty and reflects the opulence of the region’s elite at the time.

The Imarat, however, faced significant destruction during the period of occupation of Aghdam by Armenian forces. Much like other historical and religious monuments in the region, it was subjected to vandalism, looting, and desecration. Not only was the palace damaged, but the tombs of key historical figures, including Panahali Khan, Ibrahimkhalil Khan, and Mehdigulu Khan, along with the grave of Khurshidbanu Natavan, a prominent Azerbaijani poet and artist, were also desecrated. These tombs had served as important symbols of Karabakh’s history and cultural heritage.

Following the liberation of Aghdam, restoration and archaeological work began in the Imarat Complex to preserve and revive the cultural heritage of the region. Under the guidance of President Ilham Aliyev, local and international experts have worked to restore the complex, ensuring that it not only reflects its historical significance but also becomes a modern centre for education and tourism.
