Bangladeshi former PM hints at US role in her ouster

11 August 2024 17:19

Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has recently addressed her sudden resignation and subsequent departure to India, hinting at possible US involvement in her ouster.

In her statement, Hasina explained that her resignation was a measure to prevent further violence. “I stepped down to halt the bloodshed. They aimed to seize control over the students, but I circumvented that by resigning,” she stated, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Bangladesh is grappling with severe political instability following Sheikh Hasina's resignation on August 5. Her departure came amid intense student protests against a contentious government employment quota system. As violence intensified and safety concerns grew, Hasina evacuated Dhaka on a military aircraft and is now in a secure location in India.

Reflecting on her resignation, Sheikh Hasina emphasized that remaining in Bangladesh would have only exacerbated the violence and disorder.

Hasina also hinted at external pressures influencing her removal, suggesting that she could have remained in power had she compromised Bangladesh's sovereignty. "If I had ceded Saint Martin Island and allowed foreign control over the Bay of Bengal, I might have stayed in power," she claimed.
