Biden highlights complexity of recent US-Russia prisoner exchange
In his address at the Democratic National Convention, US President Joe Biden emphasised that the prisoner exchange between Russia and the US in August was one of the most challenging in world history.
"Around-the-clock efforts were made to bring home Americans and citizens of other countries who were unlawfully detained in Russia. This was one of the most complex exchanges in history, but they are now at home," Biden stated, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
On August 1, eight Russian citizens, who had been detained and imprisoned in various NATO member states, were returned to their homeland as part of a prisoner exchange at Ankara airport. Among those repatriated were minors. Russian President Vladimir Putin personally welcomed the released individuals upon their arrival at Vnukovo-2 Airport.
Among those who returned to Russia was Vadim Krasikov, a Russian citizen who had been serving a life sentence in Germany. The Russian citizens were exchanged for a group of individuals who had been acting in the interests of other countries.
